The legendary Tropicana nightclub in Havana (Cuba), with its glamorous history, serves as the starting point for Joana Tischkau’s new work, “TRAPICANA”. Together with choreographer Jeremy Nedd, Sophie Yukiko and the Malpaso Dance Company, she explores the phenomenon of the “tourist trap” and the inherent tension between cultural authenticity and exoticization. In a nightmarish revue, imagined Afro-Cuban dances collide with trap music. “TRAPICANA” deconstructs the clichés that fuel exoticizing fantasies, while simultaneously creating new visual worlds that attempt to bring us a little closer to actual reality.
