TPFKAWY deliberately uses the typical choreographies and poses of hip hop, pop, and R'n'B girl groups to examine their subversive potential. Intensification, exaggeration, and parody serve to investigate the paradox that the performance of Black feminine sexuality and embodiment is the ultimate symbol of freedom and permissiveness but also an aggressive threat and danger.
The bodies presenting themselves here question white high culture, especially conceptual dance, for its common and unmarked practice of aesthetic dehumanization. The defining and categorizing gaze is countered with a visual and choreographic exploration that blurs the lines between objectification and empowerment.
Here, Black dance practices are translated into an artistic practice by way of intersectional, feminist, and postcolonial theories.
