YO BRO

The twins Aljoscha and Joana Tischkau set out on a journey through cultural and art historical representations of kinship. Along the way, they come up against the many projections that queer and racialized people often encounter: siblings, couples, relatives. Using the performative potentials of their bodies, they try on these projections on and cast them off again. They reproduce images of similarity and otherness in order to give us a new telling of family histories.
In this special “family feud,” they work their way through all the representations used to perform family in the mass media, supported by a cast of relatives who are all complete strangers. What we know about family, we know from television. Social ideas of kinship are formed by pop-cultural images reproduced by the media.
Nostalgic memories of childhood spent in front of the telly are examined from a contemporary perspective, shedding light on the hegemonic ideas behind the dazzling surfaces:
Who is this “we” that "Married... with Children" addresses? Who’s supposed to recognize themselves in "Alf"? And what do Beyoncé and Jay-Z tell us about couple dynamics? How are family and belonging culturally defined and narrated in popular culture?
